Why salts and not just water
Sweat takes electrolytes out along with fluid. Replacing only the water dilutes what is left, which is why a long or hot session can leave you flat even after drinking plenty. This puts the salts back alongside the fluid.
Zero sugar matters here more than it sounds. Most sports drinks carry a significant sugar load that makes sense mid-marathon and makes no sense at all for an hour in the gym.
