EAA vs BCAA: The Difference, and Which to Pick
Walk down the amino acid aisle and you will find two acronyms competing for the same shelf space and the same money. The EAA vs BCAA question is one of the most common we get asked in the shop, usually by someone holding a tub of each and trying to work out whether they are buying the same thing twice.
They are not the same thing. But the honest answer to "which should I buy" is more nuanced than either camp's marketing suggests, and it starts with what the research does and does not show.
EAA vs BCAA: what the two actually are
There are twenty amino acids used to build proteins in the human body. Nine of them are essential, meaning your body cannot manufacture them and you must get them from food. Those nine are the EAAs: leucine, isoleucine, valine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and histidine.
The branched-chain amino acids are three of those nine — leucine, isoleucine and valine — named for their molecular shape. So BCAAs are a subset of EAAs, not a rival category. Every BCAA is an EAA. Most EAAs are not BCAAs.
That single fact does most of the work in this debate. If you are taking a BCAA product, you are taking three of the nine building blocks your body needs and none of the other six.
What the research has found
Building muscle protein requires all the constituent amino acids to be available. The mechanistic criticism of BCAA supplements has always been that supplying three in isolation is like delivering bricks to a building site with no cement — you can signal that construction should begin without providing everything needed to complete it. A frequently cited review in this area is bluntly titled "Branched-chain amino acids and muscle protein synthesis in humans: myth or reality?", which gives a fair sense of how contested the question is among researchers.
A systematic review of oral BCAA supplementation in athletes found that while BCAAs tended to activate anabolic signalling, effects on performance and body composition were negligible. Studies in resistance-trained participants did report reduced muscle soreness after exercise, though findings in endurance sport were inconsistent. The reviewers made an important caveat: most of the studies did not report participants' total daily protein intake, so the results should be interpreted with caution.
That caveat matters enormously. If someone is already eating plenty of protein, adding isolated amino acids on top has far less room to do anything.
Research on full-spectrum EAAs has been somewhat more favourable. One proof-of-concept trial found that EAA supplements taken after resistance exercise produced a rise in circulating amino acids and enhanced anabolic signalling, and that this held true regardless of the participants' age. That is a mechanistic finding rather than proof of a long-term training outcome, and it should be read as such.
Do BCAAs actually build muscle?
On the current evidence, BCAAs on their own are not a convincing muscle-building supplement for someone already eating adequate protein. The more defensible reasons to use one are the practical ones: you like the taste, it gets you drinking more fluid during a session, and it gives you something to sip that is not plain water. Those are legitimate reasons to buy a product. They are just not the reasons printed on the tub.
Should I take EAAs if I already have protein shakes?
Whey and other complete proteins already contain all nine essential amino acids, in quantity. If your daily protein intake is solid, an EAA product is largely redundant from a nutritional standpoint — you are buying, at considerable cost per gram, something you are already getting.
Where EAAs make more sense is where whole protein does not fit: training fasted and wanting something that will not sit heavily, very long sessions where a protein shake mid-workout is unappealing, or a restricted diet where hitting protein targets from food alone is genuinely difficult. Note that protein — the whole food or powder, not the isolated aminos — is what carries the authorised claim that it contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass.
The bit most brands leave out
Here is something you will rarely see stated plainly on a product page: neither BCAAs nor EAAs have an authorised health claim in Great Britain. Nor do glutamine, beta-alanine, citrulline or arginine, all of which sit on the same shelf.
That does not mean they do nothing. It means no claim about what they do has been assessed and approved for use in advertising, so any specific promise made about them is not something a retailer is permitted to make. When you see confident claims about recovery or endurance attached to these ingredients, you are reading marketing that has got ahead of the regulator — which is worth knowing before you spend £30 on a tub.
We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
When an amino acid drink makes practical sense
Setting the hype aside, there are reasonable use cases:
- Fluid intake. A flavoured intra-workout drink means most people drink more during a session than they otherwise would. Many EAA products now include electrolytes for this reason.
- Long or fasted sessions. Something light to sip when a full shake is not practical.
- Appetite and convenience. Low-calorie, easy to carry, easy to drink in hot conditions.
- Restricted diets. Where total protein intake is hard to reach, though food-first remains the better route.
If protein intake is already where it should be, an amino acid drink is a nice-to-have, not a priority. Spend the money on food first.
What to check on the label
Total amino acid dose per serving. Compare grams per serving, not tub size. Some products look cheap until you notice the serving is half the size of a competitor's.
Full spectrum or not. If you are buying an EAA product, check all nine are actually present in meaningful amounts rather than a token sprinkle behind a big BCAA number.
What else is in it. Plenty of products combine aminos with electrolytes, caffeine or glutamine. That may suit you, or it may mean you are paying for ingredients you do not want.
Batch testing. If you compete in a tested sport, look for certification under a scheme such as Informed Sport.
If you have any kidney condition, speak to your GP before adding concentrated amino acid products, since protein and amino acid metabolism places additional demands on the kidneys.
The short version
BCAAs are three of the nine essential amino acids; EAAs are all nine. On the evidence available, full-spectrum EAAs have the better mechanistic case, BCAAs have the weaker one, and both sit well behind simply eating enough protein. Neither carries an authorised claim in the UK. Buy one because it helps you train and hydrate comfortably, not because a label promised you a result.
